Operationally efficient company
Imagine a typical job of a software architect.
While extracting functional requirements SME (subject matter expert) is not sure and asks another SME. Another party wanna participate but is busy with urgent release.
While identifying as-is state of a system an architects waits for weeks when SMEs are available. Each of them has their own very important work.
Quality review of architecture is another ping pong game for weeks/months.
You see majority of time is spent on useless handling of work in progress.
Let’s imagine you decided to make an architect work efficient. We made it mandatory for all SMEs to help an architect ASAP.
What has been changed? Nothing.
Because one SME is busy with another very urgent work from you, another SME is busy with an urgent task from CTO.
Usually it’s very easy to become busy.
Finally you realise your organisation is not able to work efficiently. Tons of working flows go through the organisation at the same time, leaving lots of work in progress.
Is it really possible to be operationally efficient company?
Yes, but all working flows should be under control, work in progress should be minimal. Whole company has to be transformed for this.
I know companies doing it successfully. But 99% of companies find it too hard and prefer plain old low efficient work.
